Their plane crashed and was dragged out to sea, leaving the boys stranded on an unfamiliar island. Ralph suggests that Jack remain in charge of the choirboys, designating them hunters.
He was shorter than the fair boy and very fat. But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: In the midst of a nuclear war, a group of boys was being evacuated to an unnamed destination. Ralph is delighted to be on a pristine tropical island without adults, but Piggy is less pleased.
More and more of them came. Piggy urges Ralph to blow into the shell, using it to summon any other survivors to the beach. Of all the boys, only the mystic Simon has the courage to discover the true identity of the beast sighted on the mountain.
He jumped off the palm terrace into the sand and his trousers fell about his ankles; he stepped out of them and trotted to the platform. He was a boy of perhaps six years, sturdy and fair, his clothes torn, his face covered with a sticky mess of fruit.
Angry and blinded, Piggy decides to go to the place on the island called Castle Rock where the hunters have set up a base.
In agreeing to go along, Jack reveals with a flourish that he owns a large sheathed knife. Samneric have become hunters as well and betray the secret of his hiding place in the forest to Jack. Immediately the thing sounded. The two boys, bullet-headed and with hair like tow, flung themselves down and lay grinning and panting at Ralph like dogs.
There came a pause, a hiatus.
There were badges, mottoes even, stripes of color in stockings and pullovers. He noticed that he still held the knife aloft, and brought his arm down, replacing the blade in the sheath.
They were left looking at each other and the place of terror. In a reaction to this panic, Jack forms a splinter group that is eventually joined by all but a few of the boys. One night, an aerial battle occurs above the island, and a casualty of the battle floats down with his opened parachute, ultimately coming to rest on the mountaintop.
Breezes occasionally inflate the parachute, making the body appear to sit up and then sink forward again. They enjoy their jaunt into the wild, experiencing the thrill of adventure and the new friendship forming between them.
Piggy helped him up. The children gave him the same simple obedience that they had given to the men with megaphones.
The island is set ablaze and hunters fan out to kill Ralph with their spears, the sole remaining opposition to their tribe, as even now he tries to cling to his old democratic ideas. They were twins, and the eye was shocked and incredulous at such cheery duplication.
